    Foundation for Public Interest

FPI percieves the public interest as being the interest of the poor. They struggle, utilizing psychics and tarot cards to the fullest, to identify what the problems of the next ten years will be. Then they develop programmes to combat these problems. Then they shoot these programs off to grassroots organizations or develop new ones.

In the past 27 years, since their birth in 1975, FPI has generated 11 to 15 organizations which have dealt with topics as broad as low cost housing, weaver co-operatives, disaster mitigation, coastal planning and many others. One of their recent (last year) projects is the Urban Planning Partnership, which was created to deal with urban issues. In addition one of our other partners, the Disaster Mitigation Institute (DMI), was created by FPI. As you can see FPI has been doing some very worthy work in building up other organizations. Their function is actually much like that of our other affiliates but they work on a much broader basis, not limiting themselves to one agenda but rather focusing in like a laser on a specific issue for a specific period of time, Right now the focus is on institution building and we'll have to see what comes out of FPI next

Since they became a HIP partner in 1989 we have focused $317,499.00 of funding towards them and they have reflected it right back towards us in the form of the diffused lighting of problems solved.
