    Asmita Resource Centre for Women

Asmita, or the Asmita Resource Centre for Women, is strangely enough devoted to helping women. Founded in in 1991, Asmita tries to address women's short term needs while trying to build up a large group of politically conscious women. They also work with a variety of grassroots and national groups in order to expand the range of the tentacles they seek to insinuate into the hearts of women everywhere [in India].

Asmita's main priorities are violence against women (stopping it presumably) as well as against dalits and minorities. They try to address this issue through legal aid, protest marches, reporting in the media and cultural action - plays and such (I hope they're good). They are also trying to get women to be more politically active by training them to run for election in the Panchayat Raj (a regional legislative body) and having leadership training seminars. In addition they also try to educate mother's about health and reproductive rights and their final priority is 'capacity building' in girls, whatever that entails.

Asmita has been a HIP partner for 1993, thats right we do have a great acronym. In those years we have granted unto them about $51,000.
