  • DMI
    Disaster Mitigation Institute

The purpose of DMI is not to console the victims after disasters, or to help them recover. Instead they dedicate themselves to making sure that the poorest of people are prepared for disasters so that if one should happen to turn its deadly gaze towards them then they can close their eyes. In addition the DMI is a watchdog and coordinator for public and charitable relief organizations. They make sure that relief does not only benefit the wealthy (as it so frequently does) as well as making sure that the government has adequate mechanisms in place, ensuring that the tires of relief aren't flat, as they were during the Gujarat Earthquake, so that when a disaster comes they can speed swiftly to the rescue.

DMI has four main programmes, food security, water security, shelter security and work security. Which seems pretty self-explanatory, the first three being the main things (besides oneself) that should survive a disaster and the last being a place where they like to skimp on things like protection from disasters. DMI uses its influence with nation and grassroots as well as governmental organizations to 'push' these agendas. They have various specific agendas such as integrating high-tech and community-based warning systems, promoting risk auditing of large projects (make sure that damn won't collapse under a storm) and also building up local disaster mitigation and relief organizations.

DMI, an offshoot of the Foundation for Public Interest (an old partner of ours), was founded in 1999 and has been working indirectly with us since their inception. They officially became a partner in 1999 and have received $309,999.99 since then.
