Their insightful eyes seeing all, the Trein’lae are truly respected by those who have nothing to hide and hated by those who do. For they wield the most powerful weapon of all, the weapon of reality. They can, with a glance, pierce the layers of falsehood with which we swaddle ourselves.
Personality: Trein’lae are for the most part known for their cold attitude and discerning eyes. Their mandate is to observe the truth, without any bias towards one point of view. They take the notion that the Trein’lae should remain true observers, however much they may like to plunge into the thick of things that job is left to adventurers. As it is they fulfil a vital function of which the world is in dire need.
Physical Description: Look like 3e Gnomes. But their eyes are totally white.
Alignment: Tend towards the Chaotic and Neutral.
Effects of War: The Trein’lae have always been a small people and have always been scattered amongst others. Thus when the Kaelra invaded they had no safe secure bastion to flee to, no large population to blend into, and no way to band together for safety. The Kaelra hated them for their ability to see past Kaelra illusions and plots, so they persecuted the Trein’lae and had them killed or imprisoned for spurious reasons. The few remaining Trein’lae dug down deep into the stones, taking refugees with the mysterious Dwarves, their traditional allies. Many Trein’lae worked with the resistance movements to detect the Kaelra counter resistance and stop it before it began. But these Trein’lae often found themselves bearing the brunt of Kaelra efforts and one by one they eventually fell. Finally the dwarves managed to get all of the Trein’lae in touch with one another and there, at the First Meeting of Followers of the Way of Silence, the Trein’lae decided to go into hiding deep underground with the dwarves and to distance themselves from surface life entirely. Over a period of one year all the Trein’lae, except for those mages able to change their appearance, retreated to the depths of the earth. Furthermore they also followed the Dwarves to the new world when that race finally decided to abandon the dying continent.
Known Trein’lae Lands: Trein’lae are devoted to observing. For this reason they will usually settle permanently amongst the other races, seemingly without rhyme or reason. You might find one as an alchemist in an isolated mountain thorp, a carpenter for a pirate ship, or dentist in a bustling metropolis.
Religion: Trein’lae worship Selliya, goddess of truth and keeper of secrets. They are devoted to finding out as much as they can about everything under the sun and stars. Trein’lae temples are centers for all surrounding Trein’lae. It is here where they will congregate and pass their studies to the priests, who will write it all down and preserve it for all eternity.
Language: Trein’lae speak a secret language of intonation, inflection, catchphrases, and gestures that can be thrown into any typical conversation to reflect a double meaning only noticeable by another person who knows it too. This language, called Tal, is a closely kept secret of the Trein’lae. Anyone else who knows it had better keep it secret, Trein’lae are known for playing fast and loose with memory blocking spells in such instances. In every-day dealings the Trein’lae tend to use the vernacular of those around them.
Names:
Accent: Slow, windy, mysticalish sounding
Adventurers: Trein’lae rarely adventure. Doing so requires changing things, fiddling around with the natural order of how things should be. Most are content with being well-off professionals and watching the people around them. However some rebel against the passive life to which they have seemingly been doomed and strike out on their own.
Notable Rituals: Diarists – Trein’lae spend their lives accumulating experiences and when they die, however far off that may be, those experiences will be lost. Thus most Trein’lae leave extensive written and/or visual records of their lives. Furthermore many of them will take down the lives of interesting people whom they meet.
