Races of the New World

Just as in the old world the New is rife with many forms of life, both sentient and not. But this world, especially in the north, has not yet been tamed and as yet contains many savage, barbarian races and monstrous creatures. Listed below are some of the sentient races of the New World. But reader beware that what information we have on these peoples is sketchy at best, and quite possibly outright wrong. There is quite the possibility that what we have here is simply scratching the surface, who knows what could be out beyond the pale of our current exploration.

Any discussion of the inhabitants of our new land must begin with the peoples with whom we have had the most contact, the Jaeli. These people look remarkably like Sorvanni, save that they are shorter and brownish in complexion. Needless to say, this similarity is an unexplained mystery. The Dagati peoples greatest contact with the Jaeli has been with the Jaeli tribes who sparsely inhabited the northern lands. Since the Great Migration most of these tribes have either been relocated, assimilated, or annihilated, leading to some misplaced aggression towards the Dagati. But the most significant population of Jaeli appears to be what they call the Schistikara, "Great Empire", which seems to be a consolidation of hundreds of independent states under a triad of three rulers. This empire is located to the far south and their capital is a great island to the southwest. Many Dagati actually landed in these far southern lands and are rumored to be living in Schistikara. It is this empire which has become the closest associate of the Dagati in recent years, although not always benevolently. Indeed the creation of the Council of the New Lands was first spurred by a major offensive by Schistikara, which failed due to long supply lines and lack of arcane support. This appears to be another oddity of the Jaeli and, as far as we can ascertain, the entire New World. It seems that the Jaeli have an irrational taboo against all users of the arcane, they are not unknown but when they do spring up they tend to be hunted down and killed. In light of this most visiting Jaeli must be carefully educated lest they chop off the head of the first peasant to light a fire in front of them. Apparently amongst themselves they light fires using a long and arduous mechanical process. They also do not worship specific gods as we do, but rather the elements themselves, and the spirits of the land around them, the kami. Their priests, and their only spellcasters, are called shugenjas. As you must have inferred by now, magic is much less common amongst them than amongst us. If you wish further information on the Jaeli please go here.

The Vasari, the other race with whom we have the most contact, control most of the land to the east of the Dagati territory. Except for the dark black cast of their skin the Vasari appear to be physiologically identical to the Jaeli, nevertheless they insist they are a different race. They are a strictly regimented people, every portion of their society is mobilized and controlled by a god-king who has absolute control over the lives of every man, woman, and child under his dominions. Although they have initiative, even brilliance, they still seem to possess a fanatical, unquestioning loyalty to their king and country. Part of this can perhaps be explained by the messianic nature of their leader. It seems that he appeared almost 400 years ago, making predictions of doom to come. When his predictions came true, and the nation was enveloped by a force of colonizing dao it is he who fought them off and founded a nation. He brooks worship of no mages nor clerics of rival faiths within his territory. The only spellcasters he permits are psionicist, of which he appears to be one, and minor shugenja. It was only 75 years ago that he first sent emissaries to the Council of the New Lands and the various Dagati courts. Since then a few caravan and ship-routes have sprung up. Travelers report that the Vasari are strange, but friendly.

The third race, though not truly a race in terms we think of, are the kami or spirits. These immortal creatures, who shift between the mortal plane and the spirit world, have been known to the Dagati for many years, they even appeared in the Old World. But in the old world their power was muted, though they were always present they were seldom paid attention too. But in the New World the kami possess great power. They inhabit everything, and some of the more powerful ones manifest at the mention of ideas (such as the kami of song, or death). The least powerful kami, those that inhabit a mote of dust or blade of grass for instance, are unintelligent and can not be communicated with. Those who inhabit animals have only the intelligence of their hosts and cannot be communicated with except by magic (intelligent creatures do not have kami, or maybe they do and those kami are reflected in their intelligence). But the more powerful kami, such as those who command entire rivers, the swords of great men, or houses can hear anything said in the vicinity of their domain and often choose to make their presence known even to normal folk. Sometimes, for some inexplicable reason, dead people will become kami and either roam the world or hang around some person or place important to them in life (such as an ancestral home, or even their ancestors). There are also kami offshoots, creatures who are spirits in that they are bound to the souls of the dead or to nature but who are mortal. Examples of this are dryads and ghosts. This probably occurs when a kami or dead person has such a pressing need for a physical body that they generate one, even at the cost of their immortality. Though the races of the New World do have clerics to specific gods, almost all of them also have shugenjas (who derive their power from the kami).

There are many minor isolated intelligent races, the existence of which cannot be explained. Many of these races appear to have either originated on the elemental planes and forgotten their ancestry, or been wizard constructs (one of the reasons Jaeli give for hating and fearing wizards). Examples of this include the Neriads, originally from the plane of water, or ogres.

In addition, with most of the continent unexplored, it seems more than likely that there are multitudes of new species in the New World (just as there were in the Old World, before they were killed off) just waiting to be discovered.
