The Koro

< Tarazelle > I often wonder how the people managed to put up with you, since most of your oratorical skill, wit, and verse are devoted towards belittling everyone around you.

< Pascale > I say what everyone thinks but is too afraid to say, and the people respect me for it. Everyone sees the truth in my thoughts and finds it echoed in their hearts. Thats why the respect me more than those mindless artists who write only to gain their respect

There is not a person in the world who can see a Koro without feeling some sort of primal fear. This race is the epitome of a hunting animal but with human intelligence. Possessed of feline grace and maniacal strength these people roam the forests and plains of the world in their perpetual sacred hunt.

Personality: The Koro are intensely mystical. They believe that everything in the world is the direct result of mystical forces beyond the power of man’s mind to ken. They known that the only reason men can survive in such a harsh and dangerous world is through the direct power of their goddess, who takes an unusually keen interest in her creations. The Koro, since they know that a man’s destiny is out of his hands have elevated instinct to an art form. They do everything on the spur of the moment without a thought or care in the world, trusting in their goddess to save them or not as is her will. However this does not mean that the Koro are stupid or unsophisticated. They are just reckless and do not have a high regard for the value of an individual’s life. Furthermore they often have hot tempers, erratic mood-swings, and can exhibit an animal savagery.

Physical Description: Totally black skin and black hair. Tend to be slight of build. Their most noticeable features are their shining white pointed teeth and the sharp, black retractable claws that come out of the ends of their fingers. Mostly look like taller, more muscular dark elves with black hair.

Alignment: The Koro tend towards the Chaotic Neutral. They do not care about morals, rather they act as is their wont. However they have such simple needs that such does not really result in evil.

Effects of War: Before the war the Koro existed on the fringes of society. They always inhabited the untamed frontiers of society and were feared by the vast majority of people. However this meant that when the Kaelra invaded the Koro were left mostly undamaged. The moment knews of the invasion came, while the other nations of the world waffled, the Koro Dictator, a newly appointed leader of all the Koro clans, appeared at the gates of New Wessmark and offered the unconditional support of all his forces. In the following years the Koro acted as spies, scouts, raiders, and saboteurs behind the Kaelra lines. When the old Dictator was killed in a skirmish and a woman named Nichira raised in his place she formulated a bold plan. On the night of 12th Fallingwalls Koro scouts flooded into the cities and assassinated a variety of Kaelra generals and administrators. This is the day that many consider to be the start of the War of Daggers. The Koro served ably throughout this war. However the Kaelra eventually defeated some of those outposts which had been nagging it and garrisoned the unclaimed woods and wastelands from which the Koro had been operating, which must reduced their effectiveness. Furthermore the Koro’s scarcity in civilized lands made it hard for them to blend into the local population. The Koro scouts often spent the war working closely with local thieves guilds, hiding in sewers or slums. During the War of Lighting Fires the Koro were instrumental in leading the various uprisings by which the major cities of Dagat won their independence. In fact it was a Koro assassin who finally killed Deil Nelevan, the “Butcher of Wessmark”. The Koro did not suffer overmuch from the War of Earth, almost all the Koro were, by this time, concentrated in the cities and furthermore their usefulness had been proven. They had no trouble winning places on the refugee ships.

Known Race Name Lands: In the New World the Koro reverted with ease to their normal lifestyle. Most refugee colonies found that the Koro would leave after only a year or two, living in the countryside and henceforwards coming back only to trade. In the New World it is almost a certainly that in whatever godforsaken wilderness the Dagati have not yet penetrated there will be at least a few Koro lurking around.

Religion: The Koro rank amongst the most religious of races. They worship their goddess, Ntraeyu, with fanatical zeal and utter mysticism. The only major structures the Koro build are their dark twisting spires to Ntraeyu. They worship must chant their prayers at dusk every day.

Language: The Koro speak Tlrenak. This is a simple low-pitched language, that sounds like the snarls and growls of some jungle animal. It is often used by hunters, trappers, and other woodsmen even those who aren’t Koro.

Surnames - The Koro take no surname, for they have no parent but for Ntraeyu and need rely on no family but Ntraeyu. They are independent and need be judged before no eyes but Ntraeyu's and she already know's their history without the pathetic crutch of a surname.

Accent: A gutteral snarling one, like the Kilrathi.

Adventurers: In a sense all Koro are adventurers. Few of them choose the safety of a quiet village or town. Koro adventurers are considered to be those who brave their natural tendencies and venture into the cities. Not to mention those who can manage to stay on the good side of their companions long enough to get an adventure finished. Koro tend to be rangers, fighters and barbarians. There are also a significant percentage of rogues, druids, and clerics of Ntraeyu. However arcane spellcasters are rare amongst them.

Notable Rituals: Diet – Koro are carnivorous, they only eat meat and they prefer it fresh. Thus almost all Koro prefer to hunt for their food, either in the early morning or at night. Koro are not at all above eating other intelligent creatures, but will only do so if that creature is their enemy or if they are starving. Many Koro also choose to live nocturnal lives.

Shahnagar – The Nightfall, as it is called, takes place for 3 days on either side of the Winter Solstice, making the festival 7 days in total. The festival is always held outdoors in a place sacred to Ntraeyu, such as a dark cave. The locations where it is being celebrated will spread by word of mouth amongst the Koro and Ntraeyu’s most dedicated non-Koro worshippers. What happens during the festival is, of course, secret but it is during this time that most pairings are made and consummated. Since Koro only gestate for one month most of the pregnant females will remain here, guarded by their mates, and then go out on their normal life, taking their young with them.
